Biography
Atieno is an international law scholar with degrees from Georgetown University Law Center, Emory Law School and the University of Nairobi. She is admitted to the New York Bar. Atieno has worked in several African countries on issues relating to women and children's rights. She has been a MacArthur Foundation Visiting Scholar at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa, where she researched the role of human rights awareness in promoting transitions to democracy. She has also served as a consultant to UNICEF in Botswana and the World Bank’s Africa Region.
In addition to her scholarly publications, she has authored over twenty books on the right to food, health and education which are widely used in UNICEF’s programs. Atieno has been a fellow with Harvard Law School's Global Scholars Academy, and a U.S. Fulbright Scholar to Kenya. Her scholarly interests lie at the intersection of law, poverty and development, with a focus on climate change, human vulnerability, gender equality and the institutional distribution of global power.
