Georgiev appointed to SEC Investor Advisory Committee
Emory Law Associate Professor George S. Georgiev is among six experts from academia and finance recently selected to serve on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor Advisory Committee.
The committee was established under the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act to advise the SEC on regulatory priorities, regulating securities products, trading strategies, fee structures, effective disclosure, and initiatives to protect investors and the integrity of the securities marketplace. The six new members join 17 current committee members; they will serve four-year terms.
"The new members bring valuable experiences to the Investor Advisory Committee. I thank each of them for their willingness to serve, providing the commission with important perspectives on behalf of investors," SEC Chair Gary Gensler said in a September 10 announcement. "I also thank the Investor Advisory Committee's nominating committee for their diligent work in recommending these new members."
“The SEC is tasked with overseeing the U.S. capital markets—an essential engine of economic growth and a means of ensuring retirement security for over 100 million Americans,” Georgiev said. “By providing deep and relevant expertise, the Investor Advisory Committee plays an indispensable role in helping the SEC deliver on its mission, and I am thrilled that I’ll have the opportunity to contribute to these efforts over the next four years.”
The committee meets four times a year, and issues written recommendations ranging from how to protect older investors to human capital management and climate-related disclosures—the latter are both issues that Georgiev has focused upon in his research and writing. In June, he testified before the US Senate Climate Change Task Force, and in January, before the US House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services, Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, to discuss the SEC’s Climate-Related Disclosure Rule. In 2022, he was one of the principal authors of a widely cited Comment Letter on the SEC’s authority to promulgate climate-related disclosure, which was signed by 30 corporate and securities law scholars.
Georgiev joined Emory Law in 2016 and is considered an expert in business law, corporate governance, securities regulation, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and executive compensation. He received the 2024 Provost’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education, and is faculty advisor for the Emory Corporate Governance and Accountability Review. Georgiev earned his JD from Yale Law School, an MA in Economics from the University of Munich, and his BA from Colgate University. Before joining Emory Law, he was a visiting assistant professor at UCLA School of Law. He also practiced with Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and Clifford Chance LLP in London and New York City.
